Just Do Your Best
That is all you can do
I don’t know about you, but lately, I have been feeling guilty about not writing as much. I was in a good routine where I was producing one article a day. I finally found my groove and I was loving it.
And then, the disruption happened.
The time I spent writing turned into checking the news and discussing what my work place was going to do with fellow co-workers.
Before I knew it, I hadn’t written anything in a few days. That shocked me.
Then the guilt settled in. I started to beat myself up. My goal has been to write for a living so I can quit my 9–5 office job. That is what I have been striving for.
I had to quickly change my thought process. If I didn’t, I would have fallen into a pattern of guilty thoughts, beating myself up, and then I really would never accomplish anything.
At this point, I have decided to just try my best. I am being more flexible with my expectations.
And maybe you should too.
For example, I am currently working from home for my office job. So I am tied up from 8 to 4:30. However, if I feel motivated enough to write, I will do my best to write something. Even if what I write isn’t for Medium, I just want to keep my writing skills sharp.
Even if you only write a few sentences, it’s better than zero!
If there is a day where I am feeling overwhelmed or just in a funk, I will ease up on my expectations and maybe not write that day. Instead, I might read, play video games, or go for a walk.
The new Animal Crossing came out for the Nintendo Switch and that has kept me occupied and helped me feel less anxious. If you are able to, give it a try!
During these times, caring for our physical and mental health is the most important. Even though there are goals that we all have, it is also important to notice when we are having a bad day and should just relax.
Don’t just write random stuff to get an article posted for the day. Put some thought into it before posting. If you aren’t feeling it, don’t post it. Give yourself some time and come back later.
The most important thing you can do for yourself right now is to do the best you can. This situation is difficult, so don’t make it worse by being hard on yourself. Try to tap into your creativity, and try something new.
Or, just relax your expectations a little bit, and write when you can. Do whatever you feel like you can accomplish.
If you try your best, you are doing just fine. Breathe and keep going.
