If You Are Feeling Discouraged, Keep Writing
When first starting out, it can sometimes be difficult to see other writers getting views and claps while your article gets little to none.
You might feel as if you poured your heart and soul into your latest story, and no one can even be bothered to read it.
You may be tempted to delete it. It’s obvious that no one cares about what you have to say, so why not get rid of it?
Because what you have to say matters.
One of the best remedies for feeling discouraged, is to just keep writing.
The first article I ever published was picked up by The Startup and curated in Self. I was SO excited.
4 Ways I am Setting Boundaries for Myself in 2020
I have never subscribed to creating and following a New Year’s Resolution. To me, growth and change should be happening…
After this, I thought writing on here would be easy. I already got into a publication and was curated on my first try, what else would I have to do?
I was so wrong.
After that article, I kept writing.
To date, I have never had another article curated and only one other article was picked up by a publication.
I couldn’t wrap my head around it. What was I doing wrong?
I don’t know this for sure, but my gut is telling me that I have been struggling with my writing lately because I got discouraged and it poisoned my writing.
I’m not saying that everything I’ve written since my first article is crap, but I do think I have been trying too hard. I haven’t been writing with the same amount of heart that I was before. I was being careful. Trying to write in a way that I thought would be successful and speak to people.
I was changing my voice, when I should have let my writing flow and go wherever it was going to go.
What I have discovered instead, is that the best articles are the ones from the heart. The ones where you are frantically typing because you have so much to say and don’t want to forget anything. The ones you are excited to put out there because you are proud of what you wrote.
Writing, in my opinion, is one of the best ways someone can express themselves.
Writing allows you to pull out any and all of the thoughts swirling around in your head and put them into the universe.
Sometimes, you might think how you feel is crazy. That no one could possibly understand.
Or, you might think that you have nothing to say that could help anyone because you haven’t experienced the same level of success as others.
Let me tell you, if you are thinking or feeling something, you can beat other people are too.
And we all have had experiences or have some knowledge that can benefit others. Even if it doesn’t feel like it.
So, from one discouraged writer to another, do not give up. Do not stop writing. Keep putting your thoughts and feelings into the world.
And, most importantly, write with no expectations. Write for just the joy of writing.
You never know who is going to read your writing. You never know who you could help or encourage.
Keep improving your skills. Make an effort to get better and do better.
The only way you can get better at something is to keep trying. That is especially true for writing.
What you write is worthy of being read, so don’t let feeling discouraged silence you.
